Our Featured Senior Pet of the Month JESSIE!

Jessie is a handsome brown tabby who has come a long way from being initially nervous of people. Jessie enjoys being petted and brushed and just being in your company. This 'ol boy has the saddest eyes and we believe had a rough life prior to coming into our care. He has had a few teeth removed and would be best suited to a mostly wet food diet. We recently performed blood work on him (June, 2008) and his results came back normal and his kidney and liver functions were normal as well which is a great sign of health for a senior kitty. Jessie has never had a home to call his own and it would be so wonderful to see him placed in a loving home for his senior years. He has been in our program for over three years now patiently waiting for his forever home. Please open your heart and home to this sweet fellow. If you are interested in either fostering or adopting Jessie, please call CDHS at (705) 445-5204 or EMAIL US

Every day, Georgian Bay Animal Rescue welcomes stray, abandoned and unwanted animals. We make sure they receive food, a warm place to stay and veterinary care to give all of the animals in our care a second chance - a chance for a new home where they will be cherished companions for the rest of their lives

Georgian Bay Animal Rescue and our dedicated volunteers work so very hard to make room for "just one more", caring for them, educating the public about the critical need to spay and neuter their pets, with a determined goal of ending pet overpopulation.

Please help us with our cause by making a financial contribution towards the every day costs that we incur to help these animals because the animals depend on your generosity.

"Bricks" are being sold at $100 each to help us complete our new shelter building for the rescued, homeless animals in need within the Georgian Triangle. 'Bricks' can be purchased in your name, or as a gift for birthdays, anniversaries, or other special occasions, or in memory of a loved one or pet. Acknowledgement cards will be sent out as requested by donors.

A Special Plaque will be installed in the new completed shelter building to honour all who purchased a 'Brick', and helped build a home for animals in need.

There are several ways to donate: GBAR Brochure & Donation forms can be picked up at The UPS Store, Collingwood, and at most veterinary offices and pet stores in the Georgian Triangle, and also other stores in the area which display a 'Buy a Brick, Lend a Paw' poster in the window. You can also buy a 'Brick' using Canadahelps.org website Donate Now Through CanadaHelps.org! In the Fund Designation Section click on "Buy a Brick". N.B. In the 'Message/Instructions' section, please type in: 'Buy a Brick, Lend a Paw', and special occasion, person or pet being honoured.

The goal is to raise at least $300,000 to complete Phases 2 and 3 of the shelter, and allow occupancy by early Fall, 2008. The quicker the funds can be raised, the faster the homeless animals will have a safe, warm, loving environment, as they await their forever, loving homes.

Help Us Build The Georgian Bay Animal Rescue Shelter!

SHOVEL IN THE GROUND FOR GBAR SHELTER!!!

On Tuesday January 8th at our 10th line site, GBAR put that long awaited shovel into the ground as construction of Phase 1 of our much needed shelter begins. Phase 1 includes the building shell, fully closed in with windows, doors, interior walls and mechanical rough ins, supplied with its own power. Phase 1 is anticipated by Shertine Construction to be completed by May and it is important for all to keep in mind that for Phase 2 to follow promptly another milestone in our funding must have been achieved. Remember that all donations over $1000 will see the name of the donor on our Recognition Wall. If you haven’t made your donation yet, please call (705) 445-5204 or mail to GBAR, Box 492, Collingwood, On, L9Y 4B2. Phase 2 includes interior completion including mechanical work, plus exterior site work like grading, paving, sewer and water connections. Phase 3 will see the shelter fully equipped with kennels, cat condos and other specific equipment required to make the shelter operational and ready for its intended purpose of caring for our region’s needy animals. A major portion of the needed office furniture has been generously donated. GBAR will be looking for the community to continue with their generous donations of cat food, towels and blankets and special dog beds for the kennels. Volunteers will be needed for assisting with animal care and a manager and assistant will be hired to run the shelter. Thank you to all who have helped to date with this project.

The Future is Bright....

Thanks to the Town of Collingwood, the land has been donated and the New Georgian Bay ANimal Rescue Shelter will be located off Tenth Line beside the Public Works Yard (Tenth Line and Mountain Road).

As per our specially designed floor plans, animals at play will be the first thing you see when you walk in the door, with separate cat and dog indoor play rooms in the bright and inviting reception area.

Each dog will have a private "apartment" with abundant glass for viewing and a door to a separate outdoor play area. You'll find cats available for adoption in sparkling new spacious "Condos" equipped with toys and cat trees. You'll be able to take time to choose a pet in an environment that is clean, quiet and pleasant.

The new Georgian Bay Animal Rescue shelter will also include critically needed and separately ventilated isolation and medical rooms for sick or injured animals, and an important education room.

FOLLOW OUR PROGRESS!!

Below are some pictures of Phase 1 of the GBAR shelter. More to follow as construction progresses.......

WHO WE ARE..

Georgian Bay Animal Rescue (GBAR) is a registered charity run solely by unpaid volunteers, who have been dedicated to helping animals in need, since 1999. GBAR is a "No Kill' animal rescue, serving Georgian Triangle, dedicated to helping lost, injured, abandoned, neglected animals; providing compassionate care, spay/neuter, adoption, 'second chances' at life."

GEOGRAPHIC COVERAGE

GBAR has no formal boundaries; it serves the area commonly known as the ‘Georgian Triangle’, which includes the communities of Wasaga Beach, Stayner, Creemore, Collingwood, Town of Blue Mountains, Thornbury, Clarksburg, Meaford, and the surrounding areas. At times, we have provided assistance to animals beyond this region.

OUR VISION

‘No more homeless animals’ We dream and work towards a world in which there are no stray, unwanted, abandoned, neglected or abused companion animals, by building awareness of animal welfare rights, and promoting responsible pet ownership.

OUR MISSION

We are dedicated to helping injured, abandoned, neglected, abused, homeless and unwanted animals: 1. To care for these animals by providing safe, healthy, warm and loving environments. 2. To strive to place these animals in loving forever homes as quickly as possible by a well-documented adoption process. 3. To promote responsible pet ownership, including spaying and neutering, to help alleviate pet overpopulation. 4. To provide an educational aspect to our work through volunteer opportunities in our three temporary cat facilities, and by school visits to teach young people about the care and humane treatment of all sentient creatures.

The overall goal of GBAR is to build and operate a modern ‘No Kill’ shelter facility where animals will receive compassionate care and medical treatment, including vaccination and spay/neuter, as needed, prior to adoption.

HOW WE OPERATE

We will operate a central shelter facility housing as many animals as possible, awaiting adoption. At present, we operate three temporary cat facilities, which we hope to eliminate once our central location is constructed. All of our animals receive a health check and vaccinations. Any dogs and cats over 6 months of age are also spayed or neutered. We actively promote the adoption of these animals to good forever homes on our website and in local newspaper ads, bi-annual Newsletters, and all GBAR fundraising events.

Donations can be made for our day-to-day operation costs through the Canda Helps.org Website. In the funds designation section, be sure to click on "Operational Funds". Donate Now Through CanadaHelps.org!

Given our ‘No Kill’ policy, animals may be temporarily placed in caring foster homes until they are adopted. We also provide support in the rescue of injured wildlife by assisting in their transport to rehabilitation centres. The work of GBAR is managed by a 7 member volunteer Board of Directors consisting of: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Fundraising Chair, Cat Adoption Coordinator and Dog Adoption Coordinator.

WHY YOU SHOULD HELP

Caring for society’s homeless, needy animals is a community responsibility. Your contribution to building a permanent animal shelter in the Georgian Triangle helps to build civic pride in all aspects of community life, and makes our towns, villages and neighbourhoods better places to live, work and play. Teaching members of our society, particularly its youth, about animal welfare and human rights and the importance of understanding and respecting others, promotes the establishment of strong values throughout the community. Caring for our animals in a humane way makes us all feel proud of where we live. Research has shown that communities that care for others---human and animal—have lower rates of petty crime, juvenile delinquency and physical and mental abuse occurrences.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

Volunteers are needed to fulfil a variety of roles, including animal care, fundraising activities, adoption promotion, and provision of foster homes for animals awaiting adoption. Call (705) 445-5204 and leave a message, if you can assist.

Financial support is always urgently needed to provide for the needs of rescued, injured and sick animals brought into care daily. Donations of any amount are gratefully accepted; tax receipts are provided for donations over $20.00. Donations can now be made on-line through Canadahelps.org website. Type in 'Collingwood and District Humane Society' at the first prompt, and press 'search' button, and continue from there.

Donations-in-kind are always welcomed, particularly of items such as: canned cat food; scoopable cat litter; orphan kitten formula (KMR); towels, blankets and sheets; cat toys; pet hair brushes; pet dishes; pet carriers; flea treatment for cats and dogs (Advantage, Revolution).

Actively support our fundraising activities through your participation and/or donation of items for our silent auctions, and our summer store, “Bizarre Bazaar”.

Adopt or foster one or more of our loving animals into your home. Please visit our website at www.cdhs.petfinder.com, for a full list of animals available for adoption or fostering. We also always need ‘emergency’ (short notice) dog and cat foster homes. Please place yourself on the list of available homes.

OUR NEW PERMANENT SHELTER & ‘Buy a Brick, Lend a Paw’ Campaign

On January 8th, 2008, construction began on our new shelter building on Tenth Line, off Mountain Road, Collingwood. Phase 1 (exterior walls, roof, interior rough-ins) was completed in May, 2008. Fundraising for Phases 2 and 3 (‘Buy a Brick, Lend a Paw’ Campaign) is currently in progress, with the goal of raising $300,000. Check our website for updates and photos of the shelter as it is constructed. You can also drive by for a look-see! ‘Bricks’ can be purchased for $100 each, in your name, or as a gift for birthdays, anniversaries or other special occasions, or in memory of a loved one or pet. A Special Plaque will be installed in the completed shelter to honour all who bought a ‘Brick’ and helped build a home for animals in need. To purchase a ‘Brick’ or more, fill out the attached Donation Form, and mail it in with your information and donation amount. Call Dori at (705) 444-7208 for more information on the ‘Buy a Brick, Lend a Paw’ Campaign. You can also buy a ‘Brick’ on our website, through www.canadahelps.org, with the use of a credit card. Your support for this important fundraising campaign is urgently needed NOW in order to complete the permanent animal shelter building as quickly as possible. The faster the funds can be raised, the faster the homeless animals in our community will have a safe, warm, loving environment, as they await their loving, forever homes.

PLEASE HELP MAKE IT HAPPEN…….for the animals.

THANK YOU FOR HELPING THE ANIMALS

We wish to express our sincere thanks to all those who have helped and who continue to help in our efforts to improve the care and quality of life for companion animals in our region.

Our challenge is far from over. It is clear that we have much to do to modify attitudes and improve understanding of animal welfare and treatment. In spite of our efforts at education and awareness building, the number of animals needing our care continues to grow, resulting in corresponding increases in our operating costs and volunteer requirements. Being a ‘No Kill’ organization puts additional stress and pressure on available resources, although it is the right approach to animal care.

YOUR ongoing support remains a necessity so that all creatures living among us are provided with care, comfort, nourishment, relief from pain and, most importantly, a loving forever home.

ADOPT your next ‘best friend for life’; do not buy! Save a life by adopting from GBAR.

Not only do we care for domesticated animals, we also assist in the rescue of wildlife by assisting in their transport to a rehabilitation centre.

FOSTER HOMES DESPERATELY NEEDED

You have all heard about the upcoming shelter plans but your help is desperately needed now. Every minute of every day there is a helpless animal waiting to enter our program. Due to a lack of foster homes and the vets being at full capacity, these animals are forced to bear the elements until a temporary home becomes available. Please, open your heart and your home to one of these needy animals. Everything is supplied to help you care for these animals by Georgian Bay Animal Rescue (food, litter, vet care). All we ask of you is that you open your home and provide them with the love and care they so desperately need. Please contact us and speak to one of our Foster Coordinating Volunteers.

Thank you, on behalf of all the animals we are here to help. Please call GBAR @ 705-445-5204
